Book Review #75: The Diabolic (The Diabolic, #1) by S.J. Kincaid

20031005_1068750266589697_416498703_n“Some might call us a monstrous pair, and they would be right. Tyrus and I were both scorpions in our way, dangerous creatures crossing most treacherous of rivers together. Together we might sting- but we also would float. Perhaps Scorpions were the only ones who could save each other. Whatever lay ahead, it would always be the two of us above the rest of the universe, and woe to any who dared step in our path.”

Nemesis is a Diabolic. Created to protect a galactic Senator’s daughter, Sidonia. There’s no one Nemesis wouldn’t kill to keep her safe. But when the power-mad Emperor summons Sidonia to the galactic court as a hostage, there is only one way for Nemesis to protect Sidonia.

She must become her.

Now one of the galaxy’s most dangerous weapons is masquerading in a world of corruption and Nemesis has to hide her true abilities or risk everything. As the Empire begins to fracture and rebellion looms closer, Nemesis learns that there is something stronger than her deadly force: the one thing she’s been told she doesn’t have – humanity. And, amidst all the danger, action and intrigue, her humanity might be the only thing that can save her, Sidonia and the entire Empire…

WOW! Just WOW! I can’t even start drafting my book review for this! I actually started typing ten minutes after I finished the book! Yes, that’s just how awesome it is! It may sound cliche’ but this story is actually one of my best reads for 2017. I seldom give a five-star rating these past few months because everything seems to be just the same but this one definitely made an exception! I am so impressed and I feel totally refreshed! Honestly, it took me ages to finally be able to finish it because of work, university, etc. I even had a reading slump last week because I just can’t seem to focus on the story. But when the characters finally merged and everything fell into place, OMG!, I was left breathless and in deep awe! It exceeded my expectations and I was surprised! The main character is very different from all the other characters that I have read before. Nemesis is a diabolic who is destined to kill and protect that one person that she was created for. Diabolics are ruthless but loyal creatures. They resemble the features of a normal person but they were trained to kill and be murderous if needed. Nemesis is a badass female protagonist which can sometimes be an antagonist as well. I know, you’re getting way too confused right now but all I can say is that this story is worth a shot, I wasn’t disappointed, it is indeed worthy of your time and effort! The author writes in a very interesting manner, I like how the story went on and evolved. The political thing is not my cup of tea but I was able to enjoy it being incorporated in a science fiction slash dystopian setting. Ugh! I’m running out of words right now and everything is so overwhelming. I can’t get over the fact that I misjudged this book during the first few chapters and I am completely wrong! I did not read any book review prior to commencing this book so it was really a fair shot. I loved each and every chapter, I am fascinated by how the characters were made and polished, I am overjoyed with Nemesis’ development and I am so proud of what she became in the end. It was mentioned that Diabolics does not have any emotions and that they are not created to feel anything for anyone except for their master, but the story really astonished me because who would have thought that a “Madman” like Tyrus Domitrian can change everything? The love story included is just to die for! I’ve been shipping the pair since the moment I’ve read Tyrus’ name and YAY I am so happy with how it ended. Sorry, I can’t help but be a bit spoilery. It is so good and I am so excited for the next book to come out! There are plenty of life and love lessons and it made the story even better. One badass story like this deserves some hype and appreciation. I highly recommend this for readers of all ages who enjoy reading stories about a kickass female character.  This will undeniably blow your mind! Highly entertaining and gripping, INDEED.

“But deciding not to run away is a crucial first step…”

📚 Synopsis 📚

Against all odds, Katniss has won the Hunger Games. She and fellow District 12 tribute Peeta Mellark are miraculously still alive. Katniss should be relieved, happy even. After all, she has returned to her family and her longtime friend, Gale. Yet nothing is the way Katniss wishes it to be. Gale holds her at an icy distance. Peeta has turned his back on her completely. And there are whispers of a rebellion against the Capitol – a rebellion that Katniss and Peeta may have helped create.

Much to her shock, Katniss has fueled an unrest she’s afraid she cannot stop. And what scares her even more is that she’s not entirely convinced she should try. As time draws near for Katniss and Peeta to visit the districts on the Capitol’s cruel Victory Tour, the stakes are higher than ever. If they can’t prove, without a shadow of a doubt, that they are lost in their love for each other, the consequences will be horrifying.

📖 M Y T H O U G H T S 📖

📚 Setting 📚

The setting is astonishing like the first book (book review of The Hunger Games here)! The arena once again made me cringe over and over! This time, it contains a lot of surprises which is absent in The Hunger Games. I am very much pleased with the second installment because all my rants regarding the previous book finally vanished! The Capitol is always a symbol of royalty and class, and it is even more fabulous and luxurious this time. A lot of improvements are made and I am a very satisfied reader here! Showing how gruesome the situation among all the district in Panem is just so creative and brilliant! And the author’s ability to execute all the scenarios with justice is very commendable!

📚 Characters 📚

Katniss Everdeen never ceases to amaze me! Her feistiness is spontaneous! She is always the savior of her loved ones. She is the perfect symbol of rebellion, as mentioned in the book. Courage, bravery and ability all in one! I love how almost everyone saw her as the beacon of hope and future! She served as an inspiration among all the people. Her existence made them realize that all together they can make a difference. One thing I loathe her for is the unreciprocated love of Peetah. I don’t know if she is just in denial or stupid but Peetah is always there beside her unlike Gale. I have been and will always ship for Peeta and Katniss!

Peeta Mellark surprised me this time! In the first book, you will notice that I have tons of rant regarding his existence. Yes he is swoon-worthy that time but he lacks the personality to be worthy of Katniss’s love. But not this time! Peeta did everything he can to show Katniss what he truly feels. I loved him on the first book and I even loved him more on the 2nd one. He is the epitome of pure and selfless love. The one wherein you respect the other person’s feelings and just be happy for them even if they don’t feel the same way for you. I fell for him all over again.❤️

📚 Writing Style and Plot 📚

I am fascinated as always! Miss Collins once again took me somewhere that is full of action-packed scenes and jaw-dropping turn out of events! Her writing style is one of a kind! You will never put the book down, literally. She caught my full and undivided attention! The story is fast-paced and it’s obvious to the fact that I finished it in less than 24 hours. I like the first person narration, I was able to put on Katniss’s shoes and understand all her decisions. It wasn’t easy being her. You have to make a stand. You have to trust your guts. But the cliff-hanger though! How could you do this to me dear author? I rolled my eyes and smirked for a couple of times after reading that last line from Gale. Yes. It’s killing me! I need to start reading the 3rd book now in order for me to have the freaking closure. The twists! All of them are mind-blowing! I almost died after all those freaking revelations from Haymitch. Wow! I was caught off-guard! This is definitely one of my best reads this year.

📚 Overall Rating 📚

I am giving it a 4.5/5. I highly recommend this to readers of all ages. I know almost all of you out there have already enjoyed this trilogy a long time ago. I am a late bloomer, I know. Lol. This book is very addictive and you will keep on asking and wanting for more. It definitely deserves all the hype!

📚 Conclusion 📚

Things I learned from the story:

1. No man is an island. No matter how much Katniss refuses to build a relationship or alliance with the other tributes, she can’t escape the fact that sometimes we all need some help.
2. Peeta’s feelings towards Katniss is so pure and unconditional. I admire his perseverance and the fact that he is not insisting that she should choose him over Gale.
3. Some people may seem pathetic like Haymitch but don’t judge them. Who knows? Maybe there’s a reason behind their attitude. Give chances. People may surprise you.

📚 Favorite Lines 📚

🔖 “Having an eye for beauty isn’t the same thing as a weakness.”

🔖 “We are not just beautiful, we are dark and powerful. We star-crossed lovers from District 12, who suffered so much and enjoyed so little the rewards of our victory, do not seek the fans’ favor, grace them with our smiles, or catch their kisses. We are unforgiving. And I love it. Getting to be myself at last.”

🔖 “As coal pressured into pearls by our weighty existence. Beauty that arose out of pain.”

🔖 “The bird, the pin, the song, the berries, the watch, the cracker, the dress that burst into flames. I am the mockingjay. The one that survived despite the Capitol’s plans. The symbol of the rebellion.”

🔖 “I give up. Stop speaking, responding, refuse food and water. They can pump whatever they want into my arm, but it takes more than that to keep a person going once she’s lost the will to live.”

The story is about Katniss Everdeen, a young girl from District 12 who volunteered to become their district’s tribute to the 74th Hunger Games. Each year, one male and one female will be chosen via draw lots to represent their respective sector and fight to the death in honor of the departed who sacrificed their lives for their freedom. Her partner is Peeta Mellark, a boy who has no experience when it comes to survival. He is the son of the town’s bread maker. Katniss is a hunter; at a very young age her father taught her all the strategies and techniques in order to survive hunting at the forest. And that became her edge among the other tributes.
Is Katniss strong enough to withstand all the obstacles and hardships inside the arena?
Is Peeta putting up a show for the audience or is he actually in love with Katniss?
How will they be able to make it alive if only one tribute will be crowned as the winner?

District 12 is known for mining coal industry. It is not a wealthy sector of the government. Many people are poor and struggling really hard to live and survive. The place is well-described and wonderfully created in the book, which is what I liked most about dystopian themed books. When a place is oppressed, you can really feel the pain and suffering of the people.
The arena is the place where the annual Hunger Games take place.  It is a forest that contains plenty of crucial tests and unidentifiable threats. I liked it but I find it somewhat plain and odd, I expected a lot of mind-blowing adventures and creatures that will make the game more interesting. I thought monstrous beings will be present that will add some spice. Instead, tributes who are determined to kill each other are the only ones who are present.

Katniss is now my favorite female antagonist next to Celaena Sardothien  (from Sarah J. Maas’ Throne of Glass series)! I am always amazed with a fictional character who knows how to use a bow and arrow (or crossbow). She is one hell of a kick ass female lead and in terms of her personality, I can easily relate with her. We both find it very hard to connect with people. Yes, we do care for some, but it is impossible to like and be nice to everyone we meet. Her determination and bravery is very admirable and remarkable!
Peeta on the other hand is a lame character! Ugh! He is obviously gorgeous and has the potential but I find his character so needy and incapable. He hasn’t helped Katniss that much except to lure the opponents and redirect them away from her path. He is kind of weak. If it’s not for Katniss’ existence, he could’ve died already right from the start. But there is this one thing that I admire most about him; he shows his feelings for Katniss instead of saying it. He is true gentleman.

The author’s writing style is fantastic! So so so FANTASTIC! I love how I managed to finish it in a few days. It’s a real page-turner! BUT! Honestly, I wasn’t that mind-blown but I like how it was written. Maybe I expected a lot of jaw-dropping scenes inside the arena. I never thought that it would be easy for Katniss and it seems that things turned out in her favor most of the time. Based on the title, I looked and craved for more! Yes, MORE! I expected a lot but I was kind of dismayed. Don’t get me wrong PLEASE, I adored it, every page and chapter of it actually but something went missing and the author failed to give me that satisfaction. The WOW factor! But I have no regrets; Katniss is now the apple of my eye! She’s fierce and feisty! Kudos to the author for creating a character who is unforgettable! For the plot twist, I don’t know, I’m having a mixed emotions right now. There wasn’t much that was offered. Maybe I need to read the next book to finally get hold of it. There were tons of action-packed scenes but a remarkable twist was not noted. Is it just me? Ugh.

Despite all my rant the book still and will always deserve a 4.5 for me! I can’t give it a four or less because it’s dystopian! And I freakin’ love DYSTOPIAN! It is definitely my cup of tea. Really! Always have and always will! I don’t know why I’ve waited for a long time to finally get my hands on this masterpiece! What have I been thinking all along? Seriously? Anyway, I want to thank my sister-in-law @avy_reads for giving me the copy of The Hunger Games boxed set in foil edition as a birthday gift last year. Gosh! I so love my copy! So so so much! I think, no matter how unprepared or unarmed we are, we still and should always put up a fight. Just like what the character did in the story, she is not a PRO but she tried, she did it! I admire her determination and optimism. Her selfless love for her sister, Prim, is so heroic and a tear-jerker! She is a bona fide hero and deserves all the fame and wealth in the end.
