Janna’s Book Review #22 : Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout

“I’ve always found that the most beautiful people, truly beautiful inside and out, are the ones who are quietly unaware of their effect. The ones who throw their beauty around, waste what they have? Their beauty is only passing. It’s just a shell hiding nothing but shadows and emptiness.” -JLA

Daemon Black is the epitome of perfection except for the simple and obvious fact that he is an arrogant jackass most of the time. Katy Swartz on the other hand is the new girl-next-door who instantly became Daemon’s apple of the eye. He wants to block and resist her because he thinks that she may cause a lot of trouble. Everything is going well until one day, Daemon was forced to use his super-mojo-alien-power to save Katy from the hands of death.
How can he avoid her if he is the only chance that she can be safe?
How can Katy withstand all the mood swings and arrogance of Daemon?
Is there a chance for them to set aside their issues and just secure each other’s back?

The story was set in West Virginia where the Blacks are residing for quite some time already. Katy and her mom recently moved in from Florida because they want to start a fresh and new life away from the painful memories that her father’s death brought. I like this setting because of its simplicity and it fits perfectly in a story like this where an alien squad wants to remain anonymous and discreet from the common people and the government.
Daemon Black is strong and handsome BUT arrogant. He is popular at school because of his perfect face and body. Girls are throwing themselves towards him and he is already accustomed to this set up ever since. He is loyal to his family and friends and he is willing to destroy and kill anyone who will cause them harm especially to his twin sister, Dee.
Katy Swartz is simple, beautiful in her own way and boring (according to DaemonπŸ˜‚). She loves reading books and blogging. Gardening is also her forte which she learned from her father. She likes what she likes and wants what she wants and nothing can stop her, not even Daemon. She is a good daughter and a loyal friend to Dee.
Dee Black is the sister of Daemon and Katy’s instant best friend. She is bubbly, sweet and just like her brother, Dee is screaming perfection. She is always between two colliding walls but she enjoys watching her brother and best friend make a fool out of themselves towards and around each other.
Ash Thompson is the protagonist in the love story of Daemon and Katy. She is the typical bitter-ex-girlfriend.
This is my second Jennifer L. Armentrout book read and I must say that I wasn’t disappointed at all. It is a fast-paced story and a fast-read as well. I finished it in one sitting because godamnnnnit it is a real page turner! I lost track of time while devouring on Daemon and Katy’s cute topsy-turvy story. I literally did not put the book down but I have to stop for a couple of times because I need to pee.πŸ˜‚ I liked the idea that it involves aliens. For me, it is a different and unique story, I’ve never read a science fiction story before that includes aliens so I really did enjoy this novel. This will now set high standards for me when it comes to characters like them. It is highly entertaining especially on the scenes where Daemon is teasing Katy and seducing her.πŸ™Š Honestly, during the first few chapters, I find Daemon so annoying! His arrogance is at the level where you just want to throw the book over someone’s face!😀 It is a good thing that he did everything to gain Katy’s trust and forgiveness. I hate jerks and douche bags so I was kind of irritated with his attitude at the start of the story. Despite the fact that I enjoyed this book, I still found myself asking and looking for more. The element of surprise was not present. I wasn’t even mind-blown with the twist. The plot line is decent and nice but I wasn’t impressed that much.πŸ™Š I am craving for more!😐
I will give this book a 4 (β˜†β˜†β˜†β˜†/5).Β  Daemon Black alone nailed it! Maybe he is the only reason I enjoyed this book. LoLπŸ˜‚ I will always recommend this to readers who are looking for a new kind of story with a swoon-and-drool-worthy male antagonist that will turn your world upside down!❀ Plus! I am in deep awe right now because Daemon has just been added to my official book boyfriend list who is now at the 3rd spot!πŸ™ŠπŸ˜πŸ˜™

I think no matter how much we put up these tall and strong walls around us to prevent people from coming in, some of them will really surprise us and push us to take some risk. In this story, I witnessed how determined Daemon was on trying to push Katy away for her own safety and for the sake of the Luxen family but his feelings or their feelings for each other is so strong that even danger and possible death did not stop them from admitting what they really feel about each other. Whatever happens, we always have to let other people in and I think we should not show them our worst behavior just to make them go away and turn their backs on us. People who loves us, truly and sincerely, will always make an effort and find a way to be with us.❀
